Current Trends in Team Building

by Cynthia Shon 14. May 2009 00:05

The economy has changed the way that businesses are holding meetings-- if they are holding meetings. After the AIG bailout and subsequent media frenzy about their lavish meetings, every business expense is now under a microscope. "If we don't need it, don't do it!" has become a motto for many. However, what happens to the employees who remain and may still be in jeopardy of losing their jobs? Morale is suffering and so does productivity and effectiveness. No one knows who will still be on the team tomorrw. That is exactly why team building is so important NOW. It's not just "go-out-and-have-fun" events that could get pretty expensive and wild as in the past, but meaningful activities that help mend teams and put them back on a more productive track.

At Corporate Games we are seeing many more small team meetings. 10 people to about 40, and many are groups under 20. These are people that must work closely together and they are trying to figure out how to keep morale up and make everyone more comfortable with the idea that "change is a constant." These meetings combine serious training content with engaging team activities that are "experiential." Not experimental-- experiential. This means that people experience the challenges and situations occurring in the real world-- only in a game simulation format. This allows them to practice, fail, succeed, learn in a non-threatening environment. It also strengthens the bonds among the team members-- who must work through these activities and exercises together. It's real training combined with "edu-tainment" activities that energize and accelerate learning. The key is having a very savvy, engaging facilitator/trainer. The brainstorming, the laughter, the camaraderie, and the ability to succeed against all kinds of odds-- helps to build an incredibly strong, supportive team. And in the harsh glare of today's economy, these bonds are what will help pull everyone through.

LOVE the idea of "edu-tainment"! I work for a county that is always sending us to seminars that put us to sleep, and are facilitated by someone reading out of a book. As if our morale wasn't bad enough already because of all the lay-offs! They're lucky we don't storm the doors!

Team building should be an "edu-tainment". This would nurture their sense of belongingness and critical thinking at the same time.
